How tough is a Subaru?

We've decided to see just how tough a Subaru is.    Our goal was to take a Subaru and autocross it for as little cost as possible.  In 2007, Chase Parkway purchased a 1992 Subaru Legacy L sedan with 200,000 miles on it.  The car quickly got the nickname "Smokeshow" for it's ability to spin one front tire, and create a large cloud of tire smoke.
Autocross is a form of automotive competition where a vehicle is driven around a course outlined by cones, usually in a parking lot. Cars are classed based on their expected level of performance.  The fastest car in a group wins the class.  There is a time penalty for knocking over cones, so car control and precision driving is rewarded.  There are two organizations that sanction autocrosses in Connecticut: Connecticut Autocross and Rally Team (C.A.R.T.) and Fairfield County Sports Car Club (F.C.S.S.C.)

How did we do?  In 2008, Smokeshow the Subaru, as we call it was the class champion in the F Street Prepared Class.  Since we started racing the car in mid-2007, we've recorded 4 firsts, 14  second places and 12 third place showings.  We've only done normal maintenance to the car like oil changes, tire rotations and brake inspections.  We've had to replace the tires twice, but that's normal for the way the car is driven.  That's it for 3+ years of hard competitive driving.
This car has proven to take all we can throw at it, and still deliver parts during the week.  See for yourself why so many Subaru's are still on the road.  Subaru: the car you hand down to your kids, and maybe even your grandkids.
Like the lawyers say your mileage and experience may vary.  We only condone spirited driving under controlled circumstances.  Please obey all local laws and ordinances.  Certain types of driving may void your manufacturer warranty.

Another win for the Subaru!  We just won the ST class at the 2010 Tri-State Competition at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island.  The Tri-State is a run off event for teams from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.  Twenty five members from each state face off to win the top team prize.  Connecticut didn't win the event, we finished second, but we had several first place finishes, including Smokeshow.  Subaru tough, Subaru wins!
